Sabal Birmingham is one of the rare palms. It is a slow grower and can get up to around 15 feet. It will develop a trunk but will take up to 15 to 20 years. Meanwhile though as shrub it has magnificent large blue - green leaves. The leaves costapalmate. This palm likes to be planted in full sun. Zone 7b and warmer, 7a with good sitting and protection. The origin of this palm is one of mystery. The palm came from a elderly ladies home in Birmingham, Alabama. They say she either obtained the palm from Texas or California, the stories are different. After the lady passed away her house was demolished but luckily somebody called the Birmingham Botanicle Garden and they retrieved the palm. Unfortunatley though the palm died due to transplant shock and the freezes of the 1980's. Luckily though someone thought to retrieve some seeds from the palm and distribute them to other plants enthusiast. And that is where we get are Sabal Birminghams from for today.
